The Birth of Iron Monkey Strength: How a Long Island Gym Rose from the Pandemic
The Birth of Iron Monkey Strength: How a Long Island Gym Rose from the Pandemic
By Jason Giles CSCS, SF Elite, Founder of Iron Monkey Strength
A few months ago, I was on a podcast with Dr. Kingsley from Evolve to Perform in Garden City (watch the podcast here), along with his social media expert, Jordan. They asked me a question I get all the time:
“Where did the name Iron Monkey Strength come from?”
It’s a great question—because the real story isn’t just about a name. It’s about resilience, reinvention, and community.
Sure, I incorporated Iron Monkey Strength in 2018. We had the branding, the vision, and the dream of building a strength training community right here on Long Island. But the true birth of Iron Monkey Strength didn’t happen until 2020, in the middle of the pandemic.
When the World Shut Down
Like every other gym owner in New York, I had to close my doors. First for two weeks. Then a month. Then indefinitely.
It was brutal. Bills still came in, rent was due, and there was no clear end in sight. That uncertainty—financial, emotional, and personal—took a toll on me, my business, and my family. But in that chaos, something powerful began to take shape.
That’s when Iron Monkey Strength was truly forged.
Reinventing the Gym Experience
When gyms finally got the green light to reopen—at only 25% capacity—I knew I couldn’t go back to business as usual. Group training was off the table. So I pivoted to personal training.
But I wanted to do more than just one-on-one sessions. The goal was to teach, not just train—to help people truly understand how to move, lift, and grow stronger. That’s when our first structured system was born:
The Rite of Passage Program
This 12-week program covered everything from kettlebell and barbell fundamentals to mobility and bodyweight training. Whether you were new to fitness or just needed a solid foundation, The Rite of Passage set you up for lasting success.
Our first clients—Greg, Megan, and my sister Gina—became the original “graduates.” They helped shape what would become the DNA of Iron Monkey Strength.

Building a Strength System Like No Other
As time went on, that system evolved. We built a full progression model, much like a martial arts belt system.
After completing The Rite of Passage, members earn their white pin (our version of a white belt). From there, they can advance through levels—green, red, silver, and finally black. Each level builds on the last, teaching more advanced skills, refined techniques, and greater confidence.
By the time someone earns their black pin, they’ve reached teacher status. They’re not just strong—they’re leaders.

A Community of Strength, Mindfulness, and Growth
At Iron Monkey Strength, we’re not just a gym. We’re a community.
Our members range from teens to people in their seventies—men and women, beginners and experienced lifters—all united by one goal: to become stronger in body and mind.
We don’t just push weights; we teach why things work. We emphasize form, mindfulness, and self-awareness. Watching someone walk in nervous and unsure, then grow into a confident, capable lifter—that’s what keeps me doing this every day.
That confidence doesn’t stop at the gym door. It shows up in our members’ careers, relationships, and overall sense of self. That’s the real power of strength training.
From Struggle Comes Strength
Looking back, 2020 was the year Iron Monkey Strength was reborn. Out of fear came focus. Out of hardship came innovation. And out of isolation came one of the most supportive fitness communities on Long Island.
If you’re near Nassau County or Suffolk County and looking for a Long Island gym that’s more than just treadmills and dumbbells—come visit us. You’ll find a place that’s built on respect, education, and strength.
Power to you,
— Jason
