Client Highlight: Nicholas Lahkan. — From Soccer Player to Stronger Father, Athlete, and Leader
Finding the right gym isn’t just about equipment or workouts — it’s about coaching, community, and a system that helps you move better, feel stronger, and live life without pain.
For Nick Lakan, joining Iron Monkey Strength in Franklin Square, NY became the turning point that changed how he trains, how he moves, and how he shows up as a father, athlete, and professional.
His journey is one many people can relate to: injuries, frustration with traditional gyms, and the belief that pain was just something he had to live with.
Life Outside the Gym: Work, Family, and Soccer
Nicholas works in telecommunications at the Nassau County Corrections Facility, a demanding role that requires both physical durability and mental focus. Outside of work, he’s a proud father to two boys — Nico (3) and Miguel (8 months) — and staying active with them is one of his biggest motivations for training.
Soccer has always been a major part of Nick’s life. He’s been playing since the age of five, competing in club, high school, and college soccer. While his passion for the sport never faded, injuries and physical limitations began to affect how he moved, trained, and recovered.
How Nick Found Iron Monkey Strength
Nick first learned about Iron Monkey Strength while searching for an internship for his major at Queens College. After interviewing at multiple gyms, one stood out immediately.
Jason’s passion for coaching, movement, and education made a lasting impression. What started as an internship opportunity quickly turned into a personal commitment to training — not just to get stronger, but to learn proper strength training, kettlebell techniques, and Olympic lifting fundamentals.

Before Joining Iron Monkey Strength: Pain, Injuries, and Avoiding the Gym
Before training at Iron Monkey Strength, Nicholas didn’t enjoy going to the gym at all.
He only worked out when soccer required it and avoided traditional gym routines altogether. At the time, he was dealing with:
- A lingering shoulder injury
- Recovery from a meniscus surgery that never fully healed
- Constant joint aches and discomfort
- Difficulty walking long distances and navigating stairs
Like many people, Nick assumed pain was just part of being active — especially as responsibilities increased and recovery felt harder. He also had no experience with kettlebells or Olympic weightlifting, and little understanding of how proper strength training could actually improve joint health and mobility.
The Turning Point: Real Results in the First Month
What changed everything was how quickly Nick began to feel and see results.
Within two to three weeks, his movement improved. Pain decreased. Strength increased. For the first time, training felt productive instead of draining.
Getting started was straightforward because the coaching met him where he was. The Iron Monkey Strength team worked one-on-one with Nicholas when needed, correcting technique, addressing limitations, and prescribing targeted exercises to improve mobility and joint health. Instead of pushing through pain, Nicholas learned how to train intelligently.

The Iron Monkey Strength Community Difference
One of the biggest surprises for Nick wasn’t just the coaching — it was the community.
Iron Monkey Strength is known throughout Long Island for its welcoming, supportive atmosphere, and Nicholas felt that immediately.
“Everyone knows each other, and everyone wants to see you improve.”
That environment made consistency easy. Training stopped feeling intimidating and started feeling purposeful. Along the way, Nicholas built friendships with people of different ages, backgrounds, and experience levels — connections that extended beyond the gym floor.
The Transformation: Strength, Performance, and Confidence
Physically, Nick experienced major changes:
- Reduced body fat percentage
- Increased skeletal muscle mass
- Lower BMI and stable body weight
- Significant strength gains in both upper and lower body
Some of his standout achievements include:
- Deadlifting 2.75× his bodyweight
- Strict pressing 32kg
- Competing in two Olympic weightlifting meets

But the biggest transformation was mental.
Nick developed a stronger mindset — one built on patience, resilience, and self-awareness. He learned how to push through challenges without ignoring his body and how to adjust training when needed.
“Progress isn’t always linear — and that’s okay.”
How Training Improved Life Outside the Gym
The benefits of training carried over into every part of Nicholas’s life.
At work, he feels more capable and energized. On the soccer field, he moves with more confidence and control. At home, he can keep up with his kids — lifting, chasing, and playing without getting exhausted or sore.
“Holding my oldest over my shoulders is easier now. I can play with my boys without getting gassed like I used to.”
That ability to live actively — pain-free and confident — is what sustainable strength training is all about.
Looking Ahead: Coaching, Certifications, and Growth
Nicholas isn’t done learning. His future goals include:
- Becoming SFG certified
- Earning his Functional Range Conditioning certification
- Obtaining an Olympic weightlifting coaching certification
What started as personal training has grown into a desire to help others move better and train smarter.
